Jeanne's Family

Father : Jacques D'Arc

  • Father of the Maid, was born about 1375 at Ceffonds, in the diocese of Troyes
  •  It was about the time of his marriage that he established himself at Domrémy, for Isabelle Romée was from Vouthon, a village seven kilometers distant.
  • He seems to have enjoyed an honorable position in this countryside,
  • In a document of 1423 he is described as doyen or sergeant of the village; he therefore took rank between the mayor and the provost, and was in charge of collecting the taxes,
  • he opposed with all his power the mission of his daughter, whom he wished to marry off, without a doubt.
  • He was ennobled in December, 1429.

  • Jacques d’Arc died 1431, it is said, of sorrowing over his daughter’s end.

Mother: Isabella Romee

  • Isabelle gave her daughter a religious, Catholic upbringing and taught her the craft of spinning wool.
  •  Isabelle's surname Romeé is thought to have been an honorary reference to a pilgrimage she had once made to Rome to the papal city.
  •  Isabelle was a devout Catholic who nurtured Joan in her faith and the ways of the Church believing it to be her greatest responsibility to Joan.
  • She married Jacques d'Arc and together they raised a family that included three sons and two daughters one of which was Joan of Arc.
  •  Isabelle was just a simple peasant and years later one of Joan's godmothers described Joan's parents as: "Simple labourers, honest in their poverty, for they were of small means."
  • sabelle spent the rest of her life restoring her daughter’s name.

Brother: Pierre D'Arc

  • Pierre d’Arc went to seek his sister “in France,” fought along with her at Orléans, lived in the same house with her in that city, accompanied her to Reims, and was ennobled with the rest of the family.
  • He was captured with Jeanne at Compiègne, but was eventually released. Pierre retired to the city of Orléans where he received many gifts from the King, the city of Orléans, and a pension from Duke Charles,

Brother: Jean D'Arc

  • Jean d’Arc, who fled with his sister to Neufchâteau, accompanied her to France, and was lodged at the house of Jacques Boucher at Orléans
  • he worked for the rehabilitation of his sister, appeared at Rouen and Paris, and formed a commission to get evidence from their native district and produce witnesses.

Brother: Jacquemin D'Arc

There is very little known about Jacquemin, than he was born 1402 in Vaudeville, Le Haut and died in 1450.

Sister: Catherine

Very little is known about her, she died while giving birth.

All three of her brothers were older than her. Jacquemin being the Oldest of the three and Jean being the youngest of the three. Her Sister Catherine was younger than her.

Jeanne's childhood

  • She was believed to have been born in the year 1412, although she herself was not aware of her birth date or of how old she was.
  • She was born into a peasant's family in Domremy.
  • She carried out common tasks while she lived at home, including going to the field with sheep and other cattle.
  • She learned to sew and spin. "I fear no woman in Rouen at sewing and spinning" - Jeanne D'Arc, during her trial in 1431.
  • Joan had no formal schooling and probably did not know how to read, although near her death she did know how to sign her name.
  • Her mother isabelle influenced Jeanne's devout religious beliefs.
  • She helped work the family lands, exhibiting a particular gusto for men's heavy labor, such as plowing. Her diligent work on the family farm made her strong, and many in Domremy were impressed with Joan's exceptional strength for a female.
  • Intensely religious in her beliefs, she would often get mad at churchwardens for ringing the church bells late, she went to confessions constantly.
  • Joan's youth must have been fairly idyllic. She remembered playing under a favorite tree, called the "fairy tree" according to legends of the Domremy townsfolk. During her later trial, accidental mention of this tree would cause her some trouble, as her inquisitors used it to strengthen their accusations about Joan's links to magic and the occult.
  • She was reported to have a man-like bearing, she spoke little, and was extremely prudent in every word that she spoke. She ate little and drank very little wine.
  • Likes the company of nobles, detested numerous assemblies and meetings.
  • Readily shed copious tears and had a cheerful face.
  • Displayed numerous acts of kindness, she would often give her bed to the poor who hr father would occasionally house, and would sleep next to the hearth instead. During the wars she would often comfort the wounded English.

Men = Bob Cuts and no facial hair.

WHY?
Men of the 1400s wore their hair in a bob cut. Their facial hair was shaved and they grew their hair till their shoulders or ears!

Jeanne was the original 'Angry Young Man'.

WHY?
Jeanne had a really volatile temper and she dressed up like a man!

Apparently Jeanne could not tolerate any of the army members missing mass and replied with heavy sarcasm and jibes to those who mocked her or made fun of her.
When asked about what language her 'voices' spoke in, Jeanne said that they spoke French way better than the clergyman questioning her!

POINTS TO COLLECT:

  • Sarcasm and snapping back.
  • French voices
  • Diva attitude
  • Short temper
